the brief

Kaya Camilla is a four story mixed use building with 36 residential units on the upper floors and retail uses occupying generous street frontage.

A residential building that stands apart from the typical Portland apartment complex while also creating an active corner which promotes a variety of gathering opportunities on the site, the sidewalk, and within was the developers directive.

An important part of the overall design scope is providing an opportunity to showcase art in the public spaces of the interior and exterior portions of the complex.

Contrasting laquered and satin finish walls with bold and dark flooring and ceiling give off a moody and edgy vibe that is more reminiscent of a boutique hotel than a typical apartment dwelling. A profusely planted courtyard and “baby park” with a two story green wall, fire pits, multiple seating opportunites and murals will provide gathering opportu nitues without.
